Abstract

This study investigates community water quality assessment and management in parts of the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. A total of 16 community water samples consisting of harvested rain water, surface water and ground water were analyzed for physico-chemical and bacteriological constituents. Standard field and laboratory procedures were employed for physico-chemical and bacteriological studies. Based on Canadian water quality index, .rain water possesses excellent characteristics. The results indicate fecal pollution in some of the ground water with Escherichia coli and total coliforms exceeding the international and regional recommended limts of 0 per 100 ml of sample. Rain water harvesting is recommended as a viable option for portable water sourcing. Land use planning, enactment and implementation of environmental laws are necessary in this region, for effective surface water and ground water resource management.
