Abstract

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among Algerian Women and its incidence is rising. However, little information about their risk and prognostic factors is presently available.

Aim: This research has been performed to study breast cancer risk and prognostic factors in Sidi Bel Abbès (West of Algeria).

Materials and Methods: From 15 December 2012 until 15 April 2013, a prospective study on 213 patients with histological and/or cytological breast cancer diagnosis was developed. Patient information was obtained from Clinical Records and a questionnaire about risk factors was performed. Statistical Analysis was developed by means of Statview software, Student´s t Test and ANOVA were included.

Results: Breast cancer occurred in women with a mean age of 49.65±10.54 years, an average weight of 68.93±13.19 kg, menarche age at 13.58±1.57 years, with duration of breastfeeding of 10.58±9.14 months, oral contraceptive administration of 7.13±6.21 years, and menopause age at 44.97±7.02 years. According to TNM classification, 7.07% of tumors were T1, 42.42% T2, 10.1% T3, and 26.26% T4. 17.17% of tumors were M1, and 57.63% of tumors were M0. 2.92 % were in situ carcinoma. The most common histological type was infiltrating ductal carcinoma (83%). Most tumors were Grade II SBR (69%). Weight was positively associated with ER (P=0.01 or P<0.05) and Her2neu (P=0.03 or <0.05) levels.

Conclusion: This is the first research about breast cancer risk and prognostic factors developed in this area. It suggests that weight may be an important risk factor.
