Abstract

Copyright is closely related to music and forms of the musical arts. It is not only one of the major
pillars for sustenance of the entertainment industry, but it is indeed a cornerstone, an indispensable
factor for the very existence of the industry Ekpo, [1]. In recent years, the entertainment industry has
become a multi-billion dollar, national and international business of which the copyright laws should
be used to strengthen. The paper examined the role of the musical arts education by the teacher to
impact these using the more practical methodologies of project, demonstration, discussion and field
trip for the students to experience firsthand on the need to practicalize their arts for the benefit of the
society that it is meant to serve. It examined the Nigeria Copyright laws and its importance to the
survival of the entertainment industry. It looked extensively on the copyright act; sole right and
authorship of the creator, duration of copyright and the intellectual property laws. The causes of piracy
were examined and lastly the strategies for combating piracy which is paramount for the survival of
Nigeria’s entertainment industry were suggested.
